For many years, IBM’s Rational DOORS (v.9) has been a widely adopted Requirements Management (RM) tool for teams working with high-compliance systems engineering programs. Because it’s often sold into the enterprise as part of a larger IBM suite, its widespread use is sometimes a matter of default rather than choice.
If you’re like most of today’s systems-driven engineering organizations, you’re producing complex, finished products and components. You’re probably also in a hybrid-Agile development environment and figuring out how to scale that effectively.
In business, times change because needs change. Changes driven by the rise in software-driven products, the business imperatives of on-time delivery, and extended supply-chain systems threaten to disrupt traditional manufacturing and engineering processes. Your teams are pressured to accelerate product delivery and manage growing complexity in distributed organization and supply chains, within products, and across a network of interrelated and interdependent products.
Building products, you can’t afford to waste time on tools that bog down your critical processes. Even worse is when using a tool is such a frustrating experience that people resist using it at all. You’re in a sprint leading up to launch and DOORS is always in the way.
“It is increasingly critical for tools to provide socially collaborative features, to automatically link critical development data from other tools and to present it in an easy-to-comprehend format for all development stakeholders.”VDC Research, The Global Market for Requirements Management/Definition Tools
Software-driven product development requires highly collaborative solutions and methodologies. To accelerate system design and delivery, you need alignment across the engineering, business and product-management life cycles. If you need to improve on-time delivery, demonstrate compliance to process standards, link development artifacts, establish full impact analysis and create full traceability, if you need to align teams around what they are building and why, then you need a modern requirements management solution. You need Jama.
Jama provides an intuitive user experience that’s easy to work with and accessible to all. In Review Center, engineering shares and validates specs and requirements, and management easily tracks progress and decisions. Jama serves as a contextual system of record and action for product-centric organizations such as NASA, Comcast, Caterpillar and Dolby to involve more people and greatly improve process and quality. How effective is it? Using Jama, more than 2,000 systems engineers at a Fortune 100 semiconductor company reduced their requirement process time by 83 percent.
The Opportunity: A/B Test Jama/DOORS and See for Yourself.
Maintaining product integrity is tough. Ensuring that what your company envisioned when funding a new product requires careful coordination, attention to detail and—most important—context applied to every decision and action. We have deployed Jama to make product development and management more efficient, faster and much easier for many successful teams like yours. So think big but start smart. First, talk to your team about Jama. Then, we’ll develop a deployment and expansion plan tailored to your specific needs.
How is Jama different?
Jama deconstructs documents into actionable items. You can easily see, grab and reuse items, and be confident that they’re current and include all related comments and status. Forget about wordy “reading assignments.” You can share specific work components with your team for review and approval, without the risk of compromising security or access permissions that document shuffling causes. And when it’s time to pull it all together again to submit or archive a controlled document version, Jama can do that, too. Systems engineering teams use Jama to accelerate concept, design and validation for faster times to market. They also improve productivity by eliminating lost information and communication. Jama gives everyone the context and details they need to make more accurate decisions, faster.
Behind Closed DOORS:
A True Story
DOORS is archaic. I’d been looking for a replacement because it was such a pain to use that hardly anyone did. Requirements and specs are all over the place. There’s no real traceability or collaboration between cross-functional groups due to the terrible user interface, and no intuitiveness for non-everyday users. We just couldn’t make it work like we needed it to.
In contrast, my team has been using Jama and the difference is night and day. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use, whereas DOORS requires long and drawn-out training just to learn the basics. With Jama, implementation is relatively quick; you watch a couple of videos and you’re good to go.
The DOORS environment basically forces people to take longer to get work done, and this removes productivity. For my engineering team, Jama was the tool of choice. We need a tool that enables total collaboration, with better RM, traceability, usability and overall ROI, and that tool is Jama.
An example as proof: On our very first spec review session, senior engineers who were previously accustomed to documents-based reviews were adding all their comments, questions and decisions into Jama. That speaks volumes on how easy it is to use, and how little time it takes to make and communicate decisions.

“Consider Jama’s offering if you need to support ideation and requirements workflow in product-centric delivery organizations…Jama’s product drives traceability from requirements to validation, with support for planning and management of tests. The focus of the vendor has been on ease of use and collaboration, and a key capability is the Jama Review Center functionality.
“Jama offers a strong solution in requirements management, including traceability to test management and product delivery.
“The vendor delivers ease of use that is apparent in viral adoption in requirements management…often, tools around requirements management readily become shelfware, but Jama seems to have broken that mold. Jama provides strong support for collaboration across teams, including connecting people who are not “on the system.” This drives resolution and management of both what is being built and the overall change process.”
—Gartner Research, Magic Quadrant for Application Development Life Cycle Management, 2015
“Jama is instrumental in allowing us to document requirements and define the scope of our projects. It has allowed us to formally document our applications from change requests to formal functional and performance requirements and ensure traceability. Jama has allowed our team to foster improved communication between engineering and product management. The review process facilitates discussion and leads to improved communication amongst the various teams in our organization.”
—Jonathan Kobaly, CDG-Inmedius, a Boeing Company
“Reviews are tremendously valuable in Jama. Likewise, the user interface is very intuitive for 90% of the features that users must quickly access. These are among the top reasons why we selected Jama as the official Shure RM Tool. The excellent customer support that we get makes the Jama team (business, sales and technical staff) feel like an extension of our Shure staff.”
