During this process, the boundaries between digital health and medical devices began to blur.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/digital-health-center-excellence\/what-digital-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), \u201cDigital health technologies use computing platforms, connectivity, software, and sensors for healthcare and related uses. These technologies span a wide range of uses, from applications in general wellness to applications as a medical device.\u201d\u00a0These applications are driving a lot of the wearables we see today, like a heart rate monitor\u00a0running\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0smart\u00a0watch\u00a0or a mobile application\u00a0connected to a wearable. Other examples of digital health applications might be something like 23andMe,\u00a0which\u00a0uses\u00a0genetic sequencing\u00a0data to identify\u00a0health risk factors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Emergence of Software as a Medical Device (SaMD)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Traditionally medical devices have been classified as an instrument, sometimes with software running on the actual device itself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The lines between digital health technology and medical devices get crossed once the\u00a0software\u00a0technology begins to perform a medical function, especially if the technology is not embedded within the medical device.\u00a0Consider software that determines the right medicine dose for a patient based on his or her personal data, or software that detects and diagnoses a stroke through analyzing MRI images. These are examples of software\u00a0that could be\u00a0serving as a medical device.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As digital health\u00a0has\u00a0pushed\u00a0further and further into the traditional realm of medical devices, an entirely new category was formed and regulated, which is software as a medical device (known as \u201cSaMD\u201d).\u00a0SaMD\u00a0is described as \u201csoftware that performs one or more medical functions. While the software may be embedded in a piece of hardware (as is often the case), it\u2019s the software itself that performs the medical function.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the emergence of software as a medical device, there are questions around risks, regulations and safety.
