According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Industries\/Advanced%20Electronics\/Our%20Insights\/How%20artificial%20intelligence%20can%20deliver%20real%20value%20to%20companies\/MGI-Artificial-Intelligence-Discussion-paper.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McKinsey Global Institute<\/a>, \u201cthe number of connected machine-to-machine devices has increased 300% since 2008.\u201d Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/machinaresearch.com\/login\/?next=\/forecasts\/usecase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Machina Research<\/a> \u2014 now part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner<\/a> \u2014 estimates that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/machinaresearch.com\/news\/global-m2m-market-to-grow-to-27-billion-devices-generating-usd16-trillion-revenue-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">connected machine-to-machine devices<\/a> will increase from 5 billion in 2014 to 27 billion by 2024.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An Increasingly Complex Product Development Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In an environment where modern systems are getting \u201csmarter\u201d and more complex every day, the product development process required to build them is also growing increasingly complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s systems engineers face new challenges such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tight operational margins<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating rate of innovation<\/li>\n<li>Increasingly complicated end-user demands<\/li>\n<li>Heightened focus on getting to market faster<\/li>\n<li>Increased and changing regulations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.jamasoftware.com\/requirements-management\/design-teams-requirements-management-product-complexity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this recent report by Engineering.com<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about the gap between the increasing complexity of products and requirements management.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Research conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/go.forrester.com\/consulting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forrester Consulting<\/a> on behalf of Jama Software identified five obstacles to optimized product development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unclear or changing requirements coupled with lack of timely feedback for solutions<\/li>\n<li>Lack of focus caused by conflicting stakeholder priorities, assumptions, and unclear objectives<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty collaborating across globally-distributed teams<\/li>\n<li>Unnecessary handoffs and delayed decisions<\/li>\n<li>Increased collaboration across diverse roles, including executives, operations, marketing, and quality assurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In an environment that introduces so much complexity into the product development process, strategic team collaboration offers one of the best ways to address the challenges and obstacles of the modern product development landscape.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Strategic Team Collaboration: The Key Enabler of Innovation for Systems Engineers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Teams that still operate in silos with outmoded systems will not be equipped to meet the demands of the market going forward. In this era of rapidly accelerating change, strategic team collaboration is the key to improving the product development process for all team members. And in this era, the \u201cteam\u201d includes everyone across the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s market demands require companies to build partnerships and seek solutions with more specialized materials. These partnerships mean greater sharing of data across distributed teams, partner organizations, and business units, sending a ripple effect through the supply chain as subsystem suppliers must anticipate features on the finished products and get ahead of release schedules and component costs.<\/p>\n<p>But for systems engineers used to working on internal, siloed teams, these new partnerships present previously unforeseen challenges. Clarify expectations up front. What do the terms \u201cdefine,\u201d \u201cbuild,\u201d and \u201ctest\u201d mean, for instance? What does success look like based on feedback loops such as customer interviews and design reviews? Define the \u201cwhy\u201d at the very beginning of the project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empower better decision making.<\/strong> When the whole team is clear on the \u201cwhy\u201d defined at the beginning of a project, everyone is equipped to make better decisions. Good decisions need situational awareness, comprehension of impact, and a way to gather input from others. When responsibilities are clearly defined, those involved are empowered to initiate and resolve follow-up questions and issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tighten up your traceability.<\/strong> Certain industries need to demonstrate compliance with regulations. Traceability analysis proves your system holds up under regulatory demands and meets contractual terms. In order to tighten this process, coverage analysis can help a team find gaps and understand positive and negative progress. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/blog\/better-product-development-tips-for-traceability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Extend traceability beyond engineering processes<\/a> to link development and test activities back to the business rationale.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collaborate with purpose.<\/strong> Connect everyone on the team to relevant data that\u2019s tied to the work.
