Whether you’re just entering the automotive market or looking to improve your development process, you’ll need to become extremely familiar with the ISO 26262<\/a> standard.<\/p>\n

In 2011, ISO 26262 was created to set the standard for the automotive industry and its suppliers\u00a0around\u00a0functional safety in electrical and electronic systems development.\u00a0To address the industry\u2019s\u00a0rapid\u00a0evolution\u00a0and to ensure\u00a0that\u00a0these new electronic functions remain functionally safe in the new environment, the\u00a0International Organization for Standardization<\/a>\u00a0(ISO)\u00a0recently introduced a second edition of ISO 26262\u00a0in December 2018.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of updates to sort through in the ISO 26262 2018 version, from building motorcycles to providing more guidance for the semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n

Given that the first edition of ISO 26262 hung around for roughly seven years before\u00a0it received an\u00a0update,\u00a0you can expect the most recent version to\u00a0be the standard for\u00a0driving quality and reducing risk\u00a0in\u00a0automotive functional safety\u00a0for\u00a0at least the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

What follows is a\u00a0non-comprehensive\u00a0overview to help familiarize you with important ISO 26262 second edition updates. However, it\u2019s imperative that developers for the automotive electronics\u00a0industry independently study and understand the updates and how their process must evolve to accommodate.<\/p>\n

Expansion of the ISO 26262\u2019s Scope<\/h2>\n

With the implementation of the second edition\u00a0of ISO 26262, all road vehicles are now included \u2013 not just those with four wheels and a maximum vehicle gross mass of up to 3500\u00a0kg, as was the case in the first edition.<\/p>\n

Motorcycles, trucks, buses, trailers and semi-trailers are now\u00a0all\u00a0covered in detail. Your development teams will need to familiarize themselves with the specifics.\u00a0This webinar from Automotive World<\/a>\u00a0provides a\u00a0good\u00a0summation\u00a0of the\u00a0major\u00a0changes with a particular focus on motorcycle and commercial vehicle development,\u00a0and\u00a0we\u2019ll quickly touch on some of the key points.<\/p>\n

Whereas passenger vehicles\u00a0must\u00a0adhere to an Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), the latest version of ISO 26262 introduces a Motorcycle Safety Integrity Level (MSIL).\u00a0And, as such, the hazard analysis and risk assessment for motorcycles been\u00a0altered\u00a0to\u00a0account for\u00a0the differences.\u00a0One thing worth noting is since motorcycles are so unique in their performance, there\u2019s a larger emphasis placed on the responsibility of the rider versus the machine itself.\u00a0For instance, whereas\u00a0most\u00a0cars are expected to still perform well in ice and snow,\u00a0motorcycles are not, and\u00a0so\u00a0if\u00a0a rider makes\u00a0the choice to drive in those conditions, they are purposely\u00a0accepting\u00a0a higher\u00a0degree of\u00a0risk.<\/p>\n

Since trucks and buses,\u00a0on the other hand,\u00a0are\u00a0primarily\u00a0defined by\u00a0their\u00a0larger size and mass,\u00a0those factors tie into\u00a0their controllability\u00a0and, therefore,\u00a0exposure to risk. For example, when a large truck is loaded with cargo, it’s going to have few issues with things like wheel spin on a steep hill than when it’s completely empty.\u00a0And because\u00a0different\u00a0trucks, buses and semi-trailers all have unique purposes for use (for instance, long-haul semi-trucks versus\u00a0city\u00a0buses)\u00a0and are\u00a0typically\u00a0exposed to different conditions and environments,\u00a0the second edition of ISO 26262 makes distinctions between\u00a0the base vehicle types of each.\u00a0In terms of controllability, for\u00a0example,\u00a0concrete trucks should be able to\u00a0withstand something like an unpaved construction site, whereas buses don\u2019t\u00a0regularly\u00a0encounter that\u00a0sort of\u00a0terrain.<\/p>\n

Software Tools Confidence Levels<\/h2>\n

Development software\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0used to create components for automotive systems must be qualified to do\u00a0its\u00a0job in a functional safety design environment. The qualification and classification requirements are described in\u00a0Clause 11 of ISO 26262, Part 8. Software tools receive a certified qualification report if they are fit for purpose.<\/a><\/p>\n

Functional Safety and Cybersecurity<\/h2>\n

In response to increasing\u00a0security concerns\u00a0in connected devices\u00a0in automobiles, ISO 26262 now\u00a0requires a management plan that incorporates effective communication channels between functional safety and cybersecurity<\/a>. These necessary channels have been identified at both the functional safety management level and\u00a0at the system level\u00a0for\u00a0product development.<\/p>\n

Guidelines for Semiconductors<\/h2>\n

The first edition of ISO 26262 did not include specific guidelines for semiconductors used in automotive application. This caused some confusion and led\u00a0many\u00a0automotive\u00a0teams\u00a0to create their own functional safety requirements\u00a0for\u00a0their semiconductor suppliers.<\/p>\n

Now, a new section provides guidelines on and definitions for semiconductor components and semiconductor technologies used in automotive application. This should not only eliminate\u00a0uncertainty, but\u00a0also\u00a0create uniformity when it comes to the design, verification and validation of semiconductors for the automotive industry.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Not Included<\/h2>\n

One thing that was left out of the second edition is \u201cthe non-systematic and random safety issues that will occur with autonomous systems using neural networks.\u201d\u00a0Semiconductor Engineering<\/a>\u00a0explains\u00a0that\u00a0this is because a new standard coming later this year \u2013 SOTIF, Safety Of The Intended Functionality \u2013 will include new automation technologies\u00a0for things like autonomous vehicles\u00a0not covered in ISO 26262:2018.<\/p>\n
