In\u00a02016, the Jama Software team\u00a0proudly announced<\/a>\u00a0that we had received a certification\u00a0from\u00a0internationally-recognized testing body\u00a0T\u00dcV S\u00dcD<\/a>. Jama Connect\u2122 was certified as a software tool for development of safety-related products according to ISO 26262 (up to ASIL D) and IEC 61508 (up to SIL 3). It was especially noteworthy, as Jama Software was one of the first vendors to be both SaaS and agile to have received this certification.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three years later, we\u00a0are\u00a0excited\u00a0to announce we have\u00a0extended\u00a0the scope of our\u00a0certification from T\u00dcV S\u00dcD. Jama Connect is\u00a0now\u00a0also\u00a0certified\u00a0as a software tool for development of\u00a0medical devices according to IEC 62304 and railway applications according to EN 50128.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/div>\n

This\u00a0new\u00a0certification\u00a0gives medical device developers and railway application developers\u00a0confidence\u00a0that\u00a0Jama\u00a0Connect has been\u00a0evaluated and\u00a0qualified\u00a0for\u00a0defining, building\u00a0and testing\u00a0products\u00a0that have to\u00a0meet\u00a0critical functional safety requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We recently\u00a0talked\u00a0with\u00a0Christian Nowak,\u00a0Functional Safety\u00a0Expert\u00a0at T\u00dcV S\u00dcD,\u00a0to discuss what is required\u00a0to receive\u00a0such\u00a0certifications\u00a0and what\u00a0they mean\u00a0for our customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jama Software:<\/b>\u00a0Can you explain, generally, how the certification process\u00a0<\/b>is\u00a0<\/b>completed<\/b>?\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christian Nowak<\/b>:\u00a0<\/b>For a software tool certification,\u00a0we are focusing our assessment on the development processes and the validation approach and evidences provided by our customers. An important activity is the on-site audit at the customer\u2019s premises. The first audit was conducted in 2016 as part of the original certification and we performed a\u00a0three-day re-audit in June 2018 at Jama Software\u2019s headquarters in Portland, OR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the initial audit we looked at the organization\u2019s processes in the light of the functional safety standards\u2019 requirements for developing and maintaining safety-relevant software.\u00a0The recent re-audit\u00a0included sample checks to see if these processes are being followed based on the evidences created.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We also discussed and assessed modifications and improvements of processes, which play an important role for verification and validation especially in the context of the Agile development approach at Jama Software.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS:\u00a0<\/b>What<\/b>\u00a0is required in addition to t<\/b>h<\/b>e<\/b>\u00a0on-site audit?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/b>N<\/b>:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>The on-site activities are usually supported by off-site reviews of the documentation evidences generated by the customer. Due to the agile development approach at Jama Software leading to frequent releases, our assessment approach had to be adapted and is following this pace.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, we are\u00a0regularly assessing the modifications Jama Software is applying remotely and updating our certification report accordingly.\u00a0In a way, our assessment approach has,\u00a0in this case,\u00a0also become \u201cagile.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS:<\/b>\u00a0What does this certification mean for our customers? How can they benefit from these certifications?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/b>N<\/b>:\u00a0<\/b>Every Jama customer who is attempting to adhere to the\u00a0mentioned\u00a0standards\u00a0for developing safety-related systems, hardware or software\u00a0must provide documentation evidences addressing the requirements defined in the standards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those requirements\u00a0also consider the software tools that are used for the development of safety-related systems, hardware or software. The idea is that systematic faults should be avoided not only in the actual developed systems, hardware or software, but also in the software tools used for the development.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By undergoing a successful\u00a0third-party certification by an accredited testing body like T\u00dcV S\u00dcD, Jama Software demonstrates that they are following adequate development processes and performing adequate validation activities for preventing systematic faults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, Jama customers can use the\u00a0T\u00dcV S\u00dcD\u00a0certificate as an argument for\u00a0software tool qualification in projects where increased confidence in the software tool is required. They do not have to spend all the efforts for qualifying the tool themselves;\u00a0they only have to make sure that they are following the safety manual that Jama Software is\u00a0providing for each release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS:\u00a0<\/b>What is the value for<\/b>\u00a0organizations developing products in accordance with these standards?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/b>N<\/b>:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>In some industry fields, functional safety standards are mandatory to be\u00a0complied with\u00a0\u2013 in others, product liability is a main driver.\u00a0In general, the quality, reliability and of course the safety of those products are being improved, which helps avoiding recalls, sanctions, and worse \u2013 consumer injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS:\u00a0<\/b>How long is the certificate valid for?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CS<\/b>:\u00a0<\/b>Generally,\u00a0a T\u00dcV\u00a0S\u00dcD functional safety product\u00a0certificate is valid for five years.\u00a0During this timeframe,\u00a0T\u00dcV S\u00dcD is however\u00a0regularly\u00a0monitoring the adherence to the requirements by accompanying the agile development remotely as mentioned before and by returning every two years for an on-site audit.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS:<\/b>\u00a0Is T\u00dcV S\u00dcD involved in the development of the functional safety standards?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/b>N<\/b>:<\/b>\u00a0Yes, T\u00dcV S\u00dcD is actively participating in the standardization committees. Please note that just recently the second edition of the automotive functional safety standard was released (ISO 26262:2018).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JS: <\/b>How long does\u00a0<\/b>the tool certification<\/b>\u00a0process take, on average?\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/b>N<\/b>:\u00a0<\/b>Well, this\u00a0depends on the maturity of the existing development processes, the complexity of the tool and the experience of the company with functional safety when we start with the assessment. I would say the initial certification can be achieved within\u00a0six\u00a0months, but it can also take much longer if many iteration loops are required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
