{"id":27120,"date":"2018-03-02T09:31:04","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T17:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/?p=26301"},"modified":"2023-01-19T12:56:10","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T20:56:10","slug":"how-nasa-might-revolutionize-supersonic-air-travel-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/legacy\/blog\/2018\/03\/02\/how-nasa-might-revolutionize-supersonic-air-travel-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"How NASA Might Revolutionize Supersonic Air Travel in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26303 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/03\/Header-Image_-Blog-Post-36.png\" \/> Courtesy of NASA.<\/p>\n<p>NASA hopes to evolve supersonic air travel with technology that could potentially slash domestic flight times in half.<\/p>\n<p>Under a proposed budget from the Trump administration for fiscal year 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a> \u2014\u00a0a Jama customer \u2014 would receive full authorization and funding for an experimental aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator (LBFD) or \u201cX-Plane,\u201d the innovation would travel faster than the speed of sound and at a much quieter rate than previous aircraft in its category.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes to plan, the Trump administration is hoping the plane \u2014 slated to make its debut flight in 2021 \u2014 could \u201copen a new market for U.S. companies to build faster commercial airliners, creating jobs and cutting cross-country flight times in half,\u201d according to the budget proposal.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reducing the Sonic Boom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aero\/nasa-moves-to-begin-historic-new-era-of-x-plane-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started early work<\/a>\u00a0on the X-Plane, teaming up with Lockheed Martin on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-completes-milestone-toward-quieter-supersonic-x-plane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/new-supersonic-technology-designed-to-reduce-sonic-booms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testing the latest supersonic technology<\/a> off the coast of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest drawbacks of previous iterations of supersonic aircraft was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gWGLAAYdbbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crazy loud sonic booms<\/a> they would make when flying.<\/p>\n<p>In the early \u201870s, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned supersonic passenger planes from travelling over land, largely because of the noise factor.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the main reasons a previous supersonic passenger plane, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concorde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concorde<\/a> \u2014 which travelled from 1976-2003 \u2014 was only mostly allowed to fly over largely unpopulated areas like oceans.<\/p>\n<p>With the X-Plane, on the other hand, NASA is currently seeking to lower the sonic boom to around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-5384865\/Funding-Nasas-quiet-supersonic-craft-approved.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60 dBA<\/a> or below, making it more feasible for domestic travel. In fact, a NASA engineer told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/02\/16\/nasa-supersonic-x-plane-quiet-flight\/#J9f5eWpiqmqi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mashable<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>his team is hoping to reduce the aircraft&#8217;s booms to be as soft as a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, NASA\u2019s design strategy involves ensuring the aircraft is slender enough so that it generates \u201cshockwaves of lower, more equal strength that do not form into such strong bow and tail shocks,\u201d according to the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-5384865\/Funding-Nasas-quiet-supersonic-craft-approved.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, it\u2019s speculated the plane could be nearly inaudible to those on the ground while in flight. And, if that\u2019s the case, such advancements could help make a case to the FAA that supersonic travel should be allowed over land for commercial purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supersonic Travel Market Growing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not like innovative private companies are waiting on the FAA to reverse its ban on supersonic aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Another Jama customer, <a href=\"https:\/\/boomsupersonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boom<\/a>, is currently developing supersonic commercial airplanes. Boom says its airliner is \u201cdesigned to maximize efficiency while producing a \u2018boom\u2019 at least 30 times quieter than Concorde&#8217;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boom is aiming to have its supersonic airliners up and serving customers by 2023, and already has orders from Japan Airlines and Virgin Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next big thing, hopefully in my lifetime, will be supersonic travel coming back and people traveling around the world in next to no time,\u201d Virgin Group founder Richard Branson recently told <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/02\/14\/richard-branson-supersonic-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg Television<\/a>. \u201cAnd hopefully in a relatively environmentally friendly way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for now, any flight that could get us across the country in around the same time it takes to watch a movie?
