{"id":26009,"date":"2018-02-02T10:55:31","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T18:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/?p=26009"},"modified":"2023-01-12T16:53:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T00:53:19","slug":"local-high-school-students-visit-jama-hq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/legacy\/blog\/2018\/02\/02\/local-high-school-students-visit-jama-hq\/","title":{"rendered":"Local High School Students Visit Jama HQ"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_26014\" style=\"width: 866px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26014\" class=\"wp-image-26014 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/02\/Header-Image_Rosemary.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"573\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos courtesy Lakayana Dury<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s tough to predict where the next generation of innovators will take technology in the years ahead, but it helps to give them an inside look at what\u2019s happening today.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the reasons Jama Software opened its doors on Jan. 31 to a group of students from Portland&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosemary Anderson High School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With four locations in Portland, Rosemary Anderson is an independent high school serving at-risk youth. Among other things, Jama has been working directly with the high school since last year, contributing to its robotics program \u2014\u00a0The Rosemary Rebels \u2014 but this is the first time its students had the opportunity to check out our headquarters for themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26016 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/02\/Header-Image_-Blog-Post-20.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The seven students who visited Jama\u2014\u00a0Jose, Nataniel, Ashley, Nancy, Leeann, Chase and Caelan \u2014 were all interested in a future in the tech industry, said teacher Lakayana Dury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them don\u2019t know what software is or how it works,\u201d Dury said. \u201cSo it\u2019s great to be able to expose them to this kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a brief welcome and tour of the office, Jama\u2019s CEO, Scott Roth, talked to the students and fielded questions about how the company began, the types of products and industries it supports and the value of staying connected to the local community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important companies in Portland have good relationships with schools,\u201d Roth said. \u201cYou guys are the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26015 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/02\/Header-Image_-Blog-Post-21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students then participated in a panel discussion with Jama team members from various backgrounds and areas of expertise: Iman Bilal, Technical Consultant; Shabnam Razeghian Jahromi, Manager of Customer Technical Leads; Karvari Ellingson, Software Engineer; and Getro Naissance, Technical Support Engineer.<\/p>\n<p>After the Jama team members took turns introducing themselves and describing what got them into tech, they begin answering questions and sharing advice.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Jahromi spoke about how she was initially intimidated by her male classmates when she initially began studying into Computer Science. Most of them had been working with computers since they were very young and Jahromi didn\u2019t think she could possibly measure up. Once she started studying and digging into the topics she was interested in though, everything changed. \u201cI was very, very wrong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/02\/Header-Image_-Blog-Post-24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bilal encouraged students to not shy away from topics or courses in school that are intimidating or hard to understand, as they\u2019ll likely prove useful later in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>For those interested in engineering and coding, Naissance recommended beginning with some light research on YouTube for instructional videos. And Ellingson encouraged students to make an account on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitHub<\/a>, and to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynda.com<\/a> for introductory programming courses. \u201cKeep poking at it,\u201d she said. \u201cSee what works for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day wrapped up with donuts and a guided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/resource\/30-min-demo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demo of Jama<\/a> \u2014 which included a walkthrough of popular features like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamasoftware.com\/platform\/features\/#reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Review Center<\/a> \u2014 \u00a0and the hope that more students from the high school\u2019s other locations would be visiting soon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26018 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.jamasoftware.com\/www\/imports\/2018\/02\/Header-Image_-Blog-Post-22.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<input class=\"fooboxshare_post_id\" type=\"hidden\" value=\"26009\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s tough to predict where the next generation of innovators will take technology in the years ahead, but it helps to give them an inside look at what\u2019s happening today.
