Contour starts the Word Import when the file extension is .doc or .docx.

Capabilities

Import Item name and description based on paragraph styles in Word such as "Heading 1".
Item names are usually headings.
Keep the hierarchy of the heading structure.
Sub-sections will be treated as sub-items in Contour
Numbered lists and bullet points are retained.
Many of the styles are supported.
Images will be included as part of the import.
OLE components, such as embedded Visio diagrams, will be imported as PNG images.
Tables can be used to import custom field values.
Tables can be imported as individual Items.
Rows within a table can be imported as individual Items.

Limitations

Will not import table of contents.
Not all styles are converted exactly.
Mapping the name and description requires the headings to be Word defaults (i.e. Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3...).

Import Steps

1.Select a Word document in the first screen of the Import Wizard.
2.Enter the the Document Scope Options.
3. Enter the the Field Mapping Options.
Use heading as description if no description is found - If the target document has several heading sections with no text included this option will populate both the name and the description field with the text found in the heading.  This is best used when the names for the imported Items will likely be updated with shorter names.
Truncate heading at length - Contour will automatically truncate names to 255 characters so that the names do not overwhelm the explorer and results list.  This option allows the user to further control the name length.
Field Mapping - Here the styles used in Word to identify the Item name and description can be entered.  See the MS Word Import Example from more detail.
Field Defaults - Contour field values that are not available within the target document can be set to a default.
4.Select the Table Import Style.  The default option is to include tables into an Item's description.
Descriptions may include tables. - default option
Each table is an individual item.
Each table row is an individual item.

Note: The default option should be selected when the target document has no tables or the tables hold content for the description only.  The other options require table mapping.

5.Preview the first Item to be imported.
6.Submit the Import.
7.Review the Import Summary.
