There are four ways to add an Item into Contour: Add Item, Add Related Item, Duplicate an Item and via an Import. Add Item and Add Related Item will be covered here.
Note: Adding Components, Sets, and Folders is very similar to adding other Items as described below.
Add Item
| 1. | Click the Add button within the Filter, Explorer, Baselines, or Releases tab to reveal all of the available Items you can add. Clicking one of these Items will open the Add Item window where you can define details of the Item. |

| 2. | After submitting details in the Add Item window you'll notice Contour will help you find valid locations for the chosen Item to add. Invalid locations, such as adding a Requirement Item to a Use Case Set will be grayed out in the location panel. See Moving Items for the rules of valid locations. |
| 3. | Use the context menu Add or an open Item's 'Add' drop-down to add an Item at this location. |
Note: Adding an Item via the context menu or an Item's 'Add' drop-down will only list valid Item's to add for this location.
| 4. | If you don't see an Item that you'd like to add, be sure to check the Organization Administration to verify the Item Type has been created and also check the Project Configuration to verify the Item Type is visible to the Project. |
| 5. | Fill out the form and click Save to continue working, or Save and Close to commit your changes. |

Version Note and Email Notifications
After clicking on Save and Close you will be taken to the Version and Email Notification dialog.
| 1. | Contour will populate the Version Notes with the field names of Items that where updated or, after creating a new Item, Contour enters "Initial creation" in the version notes. |
| 2. | Any comments created in this screen will display in the Item Activities Widget as part of the Version Notes. You may append additional comments or overwrite the default comments. |
| 3. | Select from the list of users or groups if you'd like Contour to notify one or more people about the Item. Contour will send an email with the version notes, details of the change and a link back to Contour. |
| 4. | Click Commit to save your changes and return to Contour. |

Add Related Item
Traceability is one of Contour's powerful features. The easiest way to automatically create a relationship between two Items is by first selecting the target Item and then adding a new related Item. Contour will use the configured default relationship.
| 1. | Select the Item that you want the new Item to be related to. |
| 2. | From the Item's 'Add' menu select 'Add Related'. |
| 3. | Select the desired valid location. |
| 4. | Complete data entry and Save and Close. |
